Kevin the 25 year-old Goffin's Cockatoo

Update March 21, 2010: With great sadness Kevin died in a tragic accident. Between the time he went to bed on March 20 and the following morning he became trapped upside down in an empty cup  holder in his cage.
Please DO NOT leave cup holders empty, place a bowl with foot toys, shredded safe paper, etc. in the holders. Kevin's tragic death is a warning for all of us.
Kevin is a 25 year-old Goffin's Cockatoo who was wild caught and lived with his original caregiver for those 25 years. In late 2009 he was fortunate to find a caring second family in Calgary when he was "advertised FREE TO A GOOD HOME."

Kevin was not always this content and healthy, his original caregiver had moved him in a very small cage to the dark basement some years ago because of Kevin's noise. Inside the cage was a dish for food, water and one pvc perch - nothing else! In Kevin's early years, when his caregiver was single, Kevin talked and was very much a big part of the caregiver's life. Marriage and children changed all of that for Kevin.

Kevin's new caregivers have not had issues with noise as his new, appropriately sized cage is located in the living room with lots of interaction with family members. Kevin has a tendency not to trust females at this point in time, which the family is working to resolve.
Cockatoos can be loud, destructive and demanding.
www.mytoos.com is an excellent site to reference for no nonsense information on cockatoos.
