Amazon

The Amazon An Amazon parrot is a large parrot of the genus Amazona native to the New World ranging from South America to Mexico and the Caribbean. Most Amazons are predominatly green, with accenting colors that depend on the species and can be quite vivid. Amazons, like all parrots, are zygodactyl, having four toes on each foot - two front and two back. They feed primarily on nuts and fruits, supplemented by leafy matter.
Amazon parrots, like Macaws, and the African Grey parrot, have a remarkable ability to mimic human speech and other sounds, and partly because of this they are popular as companion parrots. This popularity has led to many parrots being taken from the wild to the extent that some species have become threatened. CITES treaties have made trapping wild parrots for the pet trade illegal to protect wild populations.

Parrot Could Be Oldest Pet in Abbotsford, BC "Loves fruit, pasta and fingers" is the sign posted on the four-foot-tall cage sitting in the corner of Valley Feed Bag, Abbotsford, BC Inside the cage is Loretta, a yellow naped Amazon parrot. She is known as the grouchy old lady. At 65 years of age she could be the oldest pet in town. She came to live at the pet food supply store about 20 years ago. She visits Dr. K. Macquisten of Whatcom Road Veterinary Hospital three times annually for wellness exams. According to the doctor, she is in the stage of life equivalent to a person around 100 years of age. Loretta is proof to the longevity of parrots and reinforces the need to understand that owning a parrot/s is a life-long committment.
