Goffin's Cockatoo or Tanimbar Corella

The Tanimbar Corella, Cacatua goffiniana, also known as the Goffin's Cockatoo or Goffin's Corella, is a species of cockatoo endemic to forests of Yamdena, Larat and Selaru, all islands in the Tanimbar Islands archipelago in Indonesia. This species was only formally described in 2004, after it was discovered that the previous formal descriptions pertained to cockatoos of a different cockatoo species, the Ducorps' Cockatoo (Cacatua ducorpsii).

Throughout the 1970's and 80's, Japanese loggers ravaged the islands with tens of thousands of Goffin's being exported. Many died of stress in shipment. In 1992, the Goffin's was added to Appendix I of the C.I.T.E.S. (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) treaty. Appendix I is reserved for those species who are imminently threatened with extinction. It is reported the Goffin's Cockatoo are quite possibly extinct.

Goffin's Cockatoos are the smallest of the white cockatoos and possibly one of the most energetic and inquisitive. On average the female weighs about 250 grams and males around 300 grams. They are about 31cm (12 inches) from head to tail with their feathers predominantly white, with pale yellow on the underside of the wings and tail, pink lores, and a salmon-colored tinge to the base of the head and neck feathers. The beak is greyish-white. The eyes are black (however, adult females tend to have a reddish-brown iris), surrounded by a featherless white eye ring. As with all cockatoos, Goffin's have a crest, but it is much smaller than that of the Umbrella or Moluccan Cockatoo. It is estimated that in captivity the Goffin's average lifespan can be about 40 years.

As with other parrot species they can develop self-destructive behaviors if not provided with an enriching and stimulating environment. Due to their energy level the larger the cage the more beneficial for the Goffin's. Not known for their talking ability they more than compensate for with their intelligence, ability to undo knots, parrot puzzels and snuggle with their caregiver/s.
