About Us
PARROTS ARE THE MOST ENDANGERED BIRDS ON EARTH
The Calgary Parrot Club (CPC) is a registered not-for-profit organization under the Societies Act. We are individuals from all walks of life with a passion for parrots, whether it be as responsible caregivers or as non-parrot caregivers we are a dedicated, responsible group with represenation from grade school children to many years retired women and men. Our common bond is for the well being of parrots, along with all feathered critters. The CPC was established over 20 years ago. Some of the Club's objectives include:
- To educate the general public on the demanding, life long responsibility of being a parrot caregiver BEFORE an individual makes the decision to become a caregiver. We stress the vital importance of fully researching all resources before making the committment of becoming a caregiver. Given the potential lifespan of companion parrots are you willing to sacrifice the rest of your life to care for a parrot? Realize they are loud, messy, destructive and demanding in time and nutritional requirements. Parrots also are expensive (pellets, fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, nut treats, endless need for bird safe toys to destroy, proper sized cage, medical expenses, etc.) Do you or a family member have allergies? Certain parrots are not suitable. We encourage those considering becoming a caregiver to attend a meeting before they take the first step. A captive parrot will have 7 homes within the first 10 years of life.
- To promote the preservation of parrots in the wild.
- To discourage the smuggling of parrots around the world.
- To hold meetings for the benefit and education of members and their flock with expert avian speakers, including demonstations and presentations (annually 10 meetings).
The Calgary Parrot Club is NOT a rescue, sanctuary, or placement program. If you need to find a new home for your parrot, feel free to post a no cost advertisement in the "Classified" section of our newsletter or contact a local avian rescue organization (see links in the Tips Section). We will always strive to do our best to help where ever possible, please see the contacts page for contact information.
